LEWISVILLE
The Town Council last night voted to offer the Lewisville Historical Society an interest-free loan of up to $68,000 to help cover the costs of moving the Nissen House.
The house, which was built in 1876, sits on the corner of Shallowford Road and Arrowleaf Drive, one of the town's most prominent locations.
The historical society's board will meet Monday to decide whether to accept the offer.
The estimated cost of that move is $103,000. The historical society has raised about $34,000 in private donations.
The council agreed to loan the historical society $2 for every $1 raised, up to $68,000. It also agreed to give the historical society up to three years to renovate the house up to code and make it available for public use.
In addition, at the request of council member Mike Horn, the council voted to give the historical society $10,000 for restoration work. That money will not have to be repaid.
The house was sold to dentists Thomas Browder and Jonathan Liner in the spring. They said it was unsuitable for a dentists' office and submitted plans to build a new 10,000 square-foot office building.
They agreed to give the house to the historical society, which has spent much of the summer raising funds to move it.
In addition to extending the offer to the historical society, the council also approved rezoning the property for medical use and the site plan.
