Train to offer autumn trips to Virginia

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Virginia Autumn Train, presented by the N.C. Transportation Museum Foundation and the Watauga Valley chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, will offer day trips from Spencer and Greensboro to Charlottesville, Va., and back on Nov. 1 and 2.

The excursion will depart each day at 7 a.m. from the N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer, and arrive at 8 a.m. at the newly restored Greensboro Amtrak Station at 236 E. Washington St.

Passengers can board at either stop before traveling along the line that crests the White Oak Mountain and passes the Dan, Roanoke and James rivers. The train will also pass near Schuyler, the real-life setting that inspired Walton's Mountain in the television series The Waltons, before arriving in Charlottesville at noon.

A layover will allow participants time to explore Charlottesville, including the downtown pedestrian mall, which is a short walk from the station.

The train will leave Charlottesville at 2:45 p.m., returning to Greensboro at 6:30 p.m. and to Spencer at 8 p.m.
Tickets are available online at http://www.nctrans.org/events/excursion.php. You can also purchase tickets by phone at 704-636-2889 ext. 232, or in person at the N.C. Transportation Museum.
