Superintendent Donnie R. Johnson of the Ashe County Schools will retire on June 30, school officials announced yesterday.
Johnson, 54, has 32 years of experience as a teacher and school administrator.
He said he hoped his legacy will be his ability to form administrative teams "to do the right things for kids."
He became the superintendent of the Ashe schools in January 1999. Prior to that, he served as the executive director of operations and personnel in the Mount Airy City Schools.
Johnson served as a principal of Mount Airy High School for five years, and as a principal of Jones Elementary School for three years. He also worked as an assistant principal and community schools director within the Mount Airy Schools.
Johnson also was a teacher and a coach at Pilot Mountain Elementary School in Surry County.
