Former Buncombe sheriff to be sentenced for poker bribery

ASHEVILLE
A former North Carolina sheriff convicted of taking bribes from video poker operators is set to be sentenced.
Former Buncombe County Sheriff Bobby Medford is scheduled to appear at a sentencing hearing Monday morning in Asheville. Three others charged in the case also face sentencing.
A federal jury found Medford guilty in May of charges including extorting bribes from illegal video gambling operators and money laundering. Testimony indicated Medford collected as much as $553,300.
Medford served as sheriff from 1994 until December 2006.
Lts. John Harrison and Ronnie Eugene Davis will also be sentenced along with volunteer Capt. Guy Penland.
