California officials will investigate allegations that the Mormon church neglected to report nonmonetary contributions -- including phone banks, a Web site and commercials -- on behalf of Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage.
Roman Porter, the executive director of the Fair Political Practices Commission, which oversees California campaign-finance laws, signed off on the investigation after reviewing a sworn complaint filed Nov. 13. The complaint was filed by Fred Karger, the founder of the group Californians Against Hate.
Under state law, any group that contributes services or money in an election campaign is required to disclose those contributions to the secretary of state. Kim Farah, a spokeswoman for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said yesterday that the church would cooperate with the investigation.
