Winston-Salem police have identified the victim of a Monday-night homicide.
Linda Nelly Munoz-Rivera, 42, died at 108 Chestnut Trail. She had wounds to her upper body, police said.
Her husband, Alfredo Garza Ayala, 38, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death.
Ayala was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center with wounds to his upper body. Police said that his wounds did not appear to be life-threatening.
Police went to the residence just after 8 after getting a call that two people were fighting.
Police have not said what kind of weapon was used.
Munoz-Rivera's death is the 17th homicide in Winston-Salem this year. Last year, there were 21 homicides as of Nov. 3.
Charlotte apartment shooting leads to death of girl, 15
CHARLOTTE -- A Charlotte apartment complex where a 15-year-old girl was fatally shot early this week was also the site of a drive-by shooting earlier this year that killed a teenager.
Police found the bleeding girl, Ishema Gause, between two apartment buildings Monday. She died later at Carolinas Medical Center.
Police said that the girl and the shooter knew each other, but officers did not release the suspect's name. No arrests had been reported as of yesterday afternoon.
Police say that three people were shot and wounded at the same complex in June. A teen was killed the next day at the complex.
Chapel Hill bus driver charged in death of pedestrian
CHAPEL HILL -- A city bus driver has been charged in the death of a pedestrian.
Police charged James Willie Orr, 65, with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle yesterday in the death of Valerie Hughes, 33, of Burlington. She was hit Oct. 27 by a Chapel Hill Transit bus driven by Orr. She was taken to UNC Hospitals, where she died.
Orr is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 12.
It's the second time this year that a person died after being hit by a bus in Chapel Hill. In May, UNC exchange student Lisa Carolyn Moran of Scotland was jogging through the south campus when she lost her footing and slid under a bus. The driver was not charged.
Mother sues dead daughter's husband for wrongful death
RALEIGH -- The mother of a pregnant North Carolina woman found dead in her home two years ago has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her daughter's husband.
The lawsuit against Jason Young was filed yesterday in Wake Superior Court.
Authorities never named Young a suspect after his pregnant wife, Michelle, was found beaten to death in their home.
But her mother, Linda Fisher, says in her lawsuit that he should be held responsible and barred from receiving his wife's insurance benefits.
Jason Young has told investigators he was out of town on business when his wife was killed. Search warrants show that authorities characterized him as being unwilling to help.
WE WERE WRONG
An item in Monday's Community Milestones gave incorrect information about the winners of the Body By Milk MVP award. The winners were the cheerleading team of the Vikings of North Stokes High School.
