Teacher pleads guilty to sex charges

A former substitute teacher charged with having sexual contact with three students was sentenced today to at least six years in prison after agreeing to a plea bargain.

Hubert Eugene Crosby, 47, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to seven to nine years in prison by Judge William Z. Wood of Forsyth Superior Court.

Crosby was charged with eight counts of indecent liberties with a student, five counts of indecent liberties with a child, three counts of sex offense with a student and one count of promoting the prostitution of a minor.

As part of the plea deal, the charges were consolidated into one count of promoting the prostitution of a minor, three counts of indecent liberties with a child and one count of indecent liberties with a student.

Winston-Salem police began investigating Crosby on April 21, 2007, when the family of a student called police to report that Crosby had had a sexual relationship with the student over four years, beginning when the boy was 15. The boy had been a student at Reynolds and Mount Tabor high schools when Crosby was a substitute teacher, but none of the sexual contact occurred at school, authorities said.

Three weeks earlier, another student, this one an 18-year-old Reynolds student, had told a teacher about a sexual incident involving Crosby. The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office investigated that incident, but when the school-resource officer determined the incident happened off-campus, he told the student's family to call police. The family didn't call police, however, nor did the deputy. As a result, Winston-Salem police didn't initially know about the other allegation against Crosby.

Police later added two more charges of indecent liberties, stemming from a third victim.
