The annual Wallace and Peggy Carroll Vigilance Awards were presented Saturday by the National Committee for the New River.
The awards for protecting the New River honor the spirit, dedication and perseverance that Wallace Carroll, a former Winston-Salem Journal publisher and editor, and his wife, Peggy, brought to the battle to save the New River from a large dam project in the 1970s.
The winners include:
□ N.C. Volunteer of the Year: Kim Hadley, who created the committee's Web site, designs the organization's newsletters and is largely responsible for the public face of the organization.
□ Legislator of the Year: State Sen. Steve Goss, a Democrat from Watauga County, who helped the New River committee, the High Country Conservancy and the Blue Ridge Rural Land Trust in their continuing efforts to protect Pond Mountain in Ashe County.
□ The Lifetime Achievement Award: Ed Adams of Sparta, who helped found the New River committee in the 1970s and has continued working with the organization. He is a legal adviser, financial supporter and mentor.
Other award winners were from Virginia and West Virginia.
The organization has protected nearly 5,000 acres of land considered important to the New River's water quality, scenic and natural values, and has restored more than 66 miles of river and stream banks.
