NC county to have storm shelter for pets, owners

WILMINGTON
A coastal North Carolina county is planning to establish a hurricane shelter this year that will accommodate more than 100 pets and their owners.
The Wilmington Star-News reported today that New Hanover County authorities have held a drill to set up the shelter at Noble Middle School.
When a hurricane strikes, the shelter could accommodate 36 cats and 80 dogs. The animals would live in pet kennels lining hallways of the school. Owners would stay in separate areas of the school.
In the past, some pet owners have refused to evacuate because many hurricane shelters don't accept pets.
