The ZIP code for some residents of south Lewisville will change this month. A majority of residents who responded to a survey by the U.S. Postal Service said they'd preferred the Lewisville mailing address to the Clemmons mailing address that they have now, said Dawn Lambert, a boundary specialist in the Greensboro district office for the postal service.
The vote followed a town-hall style meeting on the change in February. The surveys were mailed out in the spring to the residents affected by the change.
The change will be take effect July 19, said Lewisville postmaster Michael Boone.
Part of the area south of U.S. 421 is in Lewisville's 27023 ZIP code. But more than 200 residents who live in neighborhoods south of the intersection of Dull and Concord Church roads are in Clemmons' 27012 ZIP code.
Those residents live within Lewisville's town limits, but they have Clemmons mailing addresses and must go to the Clemmons post office to pick up packages and certified mail. Now those residents will have a Lewisville address and will use the Lewisville post office on Shallowford Road.
It was the second time that a survey on the ZIP code change has been done. An earlier survey about 10 years ago found that most residents then preferred to stay with the Clemmons post office.
Lambert said that about 300 surveys were mailed and about 180 were returned. To pass, the measure needed a vote of at least a 50-percent-plus-one majority. Lambert did not have the exact figures Tuesday but said that those who voted for the change had about 20 more votes than needed to pass.
Town manager Cecil Wood said that postal officials contacted him in May to let him know that residents had approved the change. He said that the only thing that will change for the town is changing the addresses in the affected area for town mailings such as the newsletter.
"That will be a fairly minor process," he said.
