LEWISVILLE
The town of Lewisville and a Pfafftown construction firm are negotiating a way to reduce construction costs at Warren Park, a 15-acre park on Lewisville-Clemmons Road.
The negotiations have caused a slight delay in the park's construction.
"We're trying to bring it in within budget," said Cecil Wood, the town manager. "And we're very close to that."
Karl Stimson of Pfafftown was the low bidder among four construction firms bidding for the project.
Wood said that the company was a few hundred thousand dollars over budget of what the town wants to spend.
Stimson, the town staff and Arcadis, an engineering firm that is overseeing the park's design and construction, are reviewing the project in an effort to trim some of the costs.
The park is being built in two phases. The first phases will include walking trails, a pavilion, disc golf and a flat grass field that can be used for different sports.
Wood said he hopes the two sides can reach an agreement on a new construction budget by the end of this week.
Some of the changes to the original site include box culverts rather than vehicular bridges, narrower roads and relocating a few of the activities to cut back on grading, Wood said.
A groundbreaking has not been scheduled yet.
"We want to make sure we get our ducks in a row on the contract before we do that," Wood said.
The first phase of the park was supposed to open in the fall. Wood said that is still a possibility. "As quickly as we want to get the park opened, the contractor wants to get to work on it," he said.
The first phase of the park will cost $1 million. In 2007, the N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund approved a $500,000 grant to the town for construction of the park. The town matched the grant.
The town plans to apply for another grant to help pay for the second phase of the park.
