RALEIGH
Former Sen. Jesse Helms will be laid to rest with an audience of national figures and home state admirers.
A spokeswoman said Vice President Dick Cheney would attend Helms' funeral today in Raleigh. A delegation of senators also is expected at the funeral of the conservative icon.
The service will be held at Hayes-Barton Baptist Church, where the former Republican senator worshipped for decades and served as a deacon. The 86-year-old Helms died July 4.
Several hundred people attended a visitation yesterday at the church and spent several hours in the early evening visiting with Helms' family.
