NC nature preserves use solar, electric vehicles

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Two Charlotte-area nature preserves are trying to reduce carbon emissions by using three new electric- and solar-powered vehicles.
The Mecklenburg County Department of Park and Recreation was able to buy the vehicles with a $64,000 grant from the North Carolina Solar Center at North Carolina State University. The Charlotte Observer reports that the county pitched in $16,000.
The vehicles look like a cross between a golf cart and pickup truck. Two run on electricity and plug into outlets to charge the battery. Those are used at the McDowell Nature Preserve.
The third was fitted with solar panels and has to be parked in sunlight to charge. The county has used them to pick up trash and tree limbs, haul gravel and for other maintenance work.
