A team of Appalachian State University students who built a bicycle from plastic drink bottles has won first place in the first Juicy Ideas competition, winning them an expense-paid trip to Google headquarters in Mountain View, Calif.
The bicycle was built by four industrial design students: Ryan Klinger, of Huntersville; Andrew Drake of Gaithersburg, Md.; Spencer Price of Louisville, Ky.; and Justin Henry of San Diego.
The students had advanced to the national competition by winning first place in the Western North Carolina regional.
Today, the team gathered in a boardroom at ASU, where a Google program manager notified them via Web conference that they'd won the contest.
The team was among 14 finalists from colleges across the country. Each participating region had a different "throwaway" item from which students had 10 days to create something of value and upload a video of their project to YouTube for judging.
