Khalid Prince, the high-school basketball player who collapsed during a game last week, died last night.
Family members were with him at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center when he died, his grandmother said. Family members were too distraught to say more last night. The cause of death was not disclosed.
"Obviously, it's terrible. Our thoughts and prayers are with Khalid's family. It's just a terribly sad thing; it's hard to make sense of," said Theo Helm, a spokesman for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. "I think it put a sadness over everything that was happening at the school" last week, he said.
Khalid collapsed after making a three-pointer at the start of the second quarter of Parkland's junior-varsity basketball game against North Surry High School.
A teacher performed CPR until paramedics arrived. An automatic defibrillator was also used.
His death was the second to have occurred in relation to a high-school game this year.
In August, 15-year-old Matt Gfeller was rushed to Baptist after being injured during Reynolds High School's season-opening football game against Greensboro Page.
Gfeller later died of a brain injury caused by a collision with an opposing player during the game.
Helm said that counselors are prepared to help students at Parkland cope with Khalid's death. A crisis team may be sent to the school next week, if needed.
