A junior-varsity basketball player for Parkland High School collapsed during a game yesterday, a school official said last night.
Khalid Prince, 15, a freshman at Parkland, collapsed as he was running on the court about 6 p.m. during a game against North Surry High School, said Theo Helm, a spokesman for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.
Prince was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition late last night.
Helm said there was no contact before Prince fell.
"He was on the floor," said Dwain Aikens, the athletics director at Parkland. "We called paramedics, and they were there in pretty good time."
Prince also played football and had undergone a physical at the beginning of the school year, Helm said.
"There was no indication of anything abnormal," Aikens said.
A school-crisis team will be at Parkland this morning to talk with students, Helm said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family," he said.
State legislators to pick their leaders this month
RALEIGH -- State legislators taking office in January will meet over the next few weeks to choose their leaders.
The House and Senate Republicans are planning to hold caucus meetings Sunday in Greensboro.
Democrats plan to meet Dec. 17 in Raleigh.
For the Republicans, Sen. Pete Brunstetter of Forsyth County is one of two senators challenging Senate Minority Leader Phil Berger of Rockingham County. Sen. Bob Rucho of Mecklenburg County is also in the running to be minority leader.
In the House, Minority Leader Paul Stam is running a second term and said yesterday that he knows of no opposition.
For the Democrats, House Speaker Joe Hackney of Orange County and Senate leader Marc Basnight of Dare County are expected to be re-nominated to their positions.
Basnight has been Senate leader since 1993. Hackney is completing his first term as speaker.
Watauga, Ashe schools closed because of winter weather
Winter weather led to two closings and some delays yesterday at schools in Northwest North Carolina.
Schools that opened on a two-hour delay were Alleghany, Elkin City, Mount Airy City, Stokes and Surry.
Ashe and Watauga county schools were closed yesterday. Both will reopen today on a two-hour delay.
Bridge dedication to honor community leader in Surry
DOBSON -- State and local officials will dedicate a bridge over Interstate 77 as the Henry C. Lawrence Bridge on Thursday.
The bridge is on Beulah Road between Haystack and East Haystack roads.
The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. Thursday at New Hope Baptist Church, 818 Prison Camp Road in Dobson.
Lawrence sold his property in the 1960s for the construction of the interstate.
He was a tobacco farmer and tax appraiser in Surry County who assisted the Surry County Agriculture Extension Service as an adviser and teacher.
He formed a committee to raise money to rebuild a medical center in Dobson after it burned and helped solicit doctors to work there.
Lawrence died in 1976 and was buried in the New Hope Baptist Church cemetery, which he helped establish.
The Surry County Board of Commissioners requested that the DOT honor Lawrence for his contributions to the community.
