Community Milestones

IN SPORTS

□ The CP3 Allstars 13 under team finished in seventh place at the National AAU Tournament held recently in Memphis, Tenn. About 100 teams from around the country participated in the basketball tournament. The Allstars finished 7-1. Team members are: Matthew Madigan, De'Quann Thompson, Wayne Campbell, Aaron Lipscomb, Terrell Leach, Rodney Witherspoon, Darious Malbon, Keegan Pardon, Malike Wright and Phillip Gwyn. Jon Adams is the head coach and Mike Noel is the assistant coach.

□ The Team Phoenix West 16U team placed fourth recently in the USSSA National Tournament in Fort Wayne, Ind. More than 100 teams participated. In addition to the teams advancing to the final four, Ryan Daye (Elon) won the dunk contest for the 16U Division. The players who participated in the national tournament are: Jim Brumley (Greensboro Day School), Brent Glenn (Reagan High School), William Peay (Reagan), Ben Amos (North Davidson), Damian Lineberger (Reynolds), Ryan Daye (Elon), Bill Reece (Forsyth Country Day), Corey Gallisdorfer (FCDS), Austin Welch (Reynolds), Nathan Gronewoller (Reagan) and Devante Fletcher (Ragsdale). The coaches are James Glenn and Craig Dawson. The team is ranked No. 1 in the state in the USSSA D-2 5-on-5 basketball.

IN EDUCATION

□ Elizabeth O'Brien of Winston Salem was named to the spring-semester dean's list at the University of Virginia. In addition, she was recognized for outstanding academic performance for her first year studies with an invitation for membership to UVA's chapter of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, the oldest freshman honor society in the nation. An initiation ceremony and reception will take place this October in Charlottesville, Va. O'Brien is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She is a graduate of Reynolds High School and is the daughter of Drs. James O'Brien and Lorraine Arias O'Brien.

□ Drew Smith, a 2005 graduate of Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School, was selected to the 2008 SEC Spring Athletics Academic Honor Roll representing the University of Florida. He was also named to the spring-semester dean's list of the College of Health and Human Performance. Smith runs cross-country and track for the university.

□ Martha Moretz Wellman of Advance and her children have endowed the Henry M. and Martha Moretz Wellman Scholarship at Lenoir-Rhyne College with a gift of $50,000.

Martha and Henry Wellman met at Lenoir-Rhyne, and both graduated in 1940. Henry Wellman served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 30 years and was the son of a Methodist minister. The scholarship will be given to students pursuing an education degree who have a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, and financial need. Preference will be given to students who are North Carolina residents and to those who are children of U.S. military personnel or clergy.

□ Judy Uhrig of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools participated in the Discovery Educator Network National Institute July 21-25 at the headquarters of Discovery Communications in Silver Spring, Md. Participants learned more about using technology in the classroom.

□ Gina Belmont of Winston-Salem recently completed the People to People Future Leaders Summit at Columbia University in New York. The Future Leaders Summit on theater and arts brought together student leaders from around the globe. Gina was nominated and chosen for the honor based on scholastic merit, civic involvement and leadership potential.

□ Lindsey E. Boening of Clemmons has recently become a member of

Sigma Alpha Lambda, National Leadership and Honors Organization at UNC Charlotte.

□ Carter Madison Malmo of Winston-Salem, a rising senior at Forsyth Country Day School, was among 64 students selected to attend Washington and Lee University's Summer Scholars Program, which was held June 29-July 25. He is the son of Gerry and Debbie Malmo.

IN CIVIC AFFAIRS

□ The National Teenage Republicans recently awarded Kyle Hall, a recent graduate of West Stokes High School, the 2008 Outstanding Teenage Republican in the Nation award and the West Stokes High School Teenage Republicans received the 2008 Outstanding Teenage Republican Club in the Nation award. The West Stokes TARS was founded in 2006 and has about 20 members. Hall has served as the club's chairman since its beginning. He has also served as treasurer of the West Stokes Future Teachers of America and vice president of the Student Government Association.

□ Matthew Kerns Humphries of Clemmons participated in the Governor's Page Program July 7-11 in Raleigh. He provided administrative support as a page for the N.C. Department of Transportation. Matt is the son of Bruce and Ellen Humphries and is a junior at West Forsyth High School.

□ Bette James and Matilda Phillips, both of Winston-Salem, were elected officers of the N.C. Senior Democrats at the recent state convention in Clemmons. James was re-elected second vice president, and Phillips was elected third vice president. As president of the Forsyth County Chapter, Phillips also served as chairman of this year's convention.

IN THE ARTS

□ Walt Strony, a concert organist, played a dedication concert on the new Allen organ at Salemtowne Continuing Care Retirement Community on July 13.

Dr. John W. Sawyer, a Salemtowne resident, donated the new organ to Salemtowne in memory of his wife, Edna. This is the second organ that Sawyer has donated to Salemtowne.

Strony has performed worldwide and has twice been voted "Organist of the Year" by the American Theatre Organ Society.

□ Rejoice Ringers, a handbell group from Winston-Salem, was selected to participate in the 13th annual International Handbell Symposium in Orlando, Fla. The symposium, which took place Aug. 4-8, brought together more than 800 handbell ringers from 10 countries.

IN PUBLIC SERVICE

□ The N.C. Fruits & Veggies Nutrition Coalition's Fruits & Veggies Star Awards were presented recently at an annual symposium at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte. Area winners were:

Shining Star Award for School District: Ashe County Schools Child Nutrition Program.

Silver Star Award for Individual School/Childcare: Gentilesse Place of Winston-Salem.

□ Ginny Wiltsey of High Point has been elected to the board of directors of the Humane Society of the Piedmont. She is the owner, president and designer of Classy Sassy Paws Inc., a wholesale pet-couture company.

IN THE MILITARY

□ Army Pvt. Sydney M. Silverthorne has been deployed overseas to a forward operating base in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Silverthorne, a unit supply specialist, is normally assigned to the 404th Aviation Support Battalion, 4th Infantry Division,

Fort Hood, Killeen, Texas. She is a 2004 graduate of East Forsyth High School and is the daughter of Regina Williams of Greensboro and Jeff Silverthorne of Kernersville.

□ Airman Miles G. Jennings and Airman Tara M. Gay have graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Jennings, a 2006 graduate of North Forsyth High School, is the son of Roy and Teresa Jennings of Winston-Salem.

Gay, a 2008 graduate of Havelock High School, is the daughter of Ronald Gay of Havelock and Kimberly Berry of Winston-Salem.

□ Seaman Re-

cruit Marcus B. Flowers and Seaman Allen C. Conrad recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Flowers, a 2006 graduate of Davie County High School, is the son of Kathy I. and William M. Flowers of Advance.

Conrad, a 2007 graduate of North Forsyth High School, is the son of Tracie L. Southern of Rural Hall and Randall C. Conrad of Kernersville.

IN OTHER AREAS

□ Richard L. Williams has been elected Worshipful Master of Salem Lodge No. 139 in Winston-Salem.

He is president of Black Business Media and publisher of Black Business Ink magazine.

He is a former executive at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., a former editor at USA Today, and a former executive editor at the Winston-Salem Chronicle.

Williams is the chairman of the Masonic Order P.H.A. board of directors, chairman of the board of advisers of Forsyth Technical Community College/Mazie Woodruff Center, chairman of the Carolina Donor Services African-American Outreach Task Force and chairman of the AARP African-American Advisory Council.

He is a member of the board of advisers of the Small Business Technology and Development Center at Winston-Salem State University and is a founding member of the Winston-Salem Black Chamber of Commerce.

The other elected offers are: Neil Batchleor (senior warden); Kendrick Smith (financial secretary); Marcallus Sunday (treasurer), and Warren Napper (tyler). Kelvy Greene was appointed junior warden. The officers will hold the positions for 12 months. Salem Lodge No. 139 is a member of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of North Carolina.

□ Melanie Carriker, Jennifer Jobe and Julie Sizemore of Winston-Salem, members of the Winston-Salem Junior Woman's Club, were among more than 1,300 women who attended the General Federation of Women's Clubs' 117th Annual International Convention June 27-July 2 in Chicago.

The convention included award presentations and renowned speakers, as well as the installation of the organization's new international president, Rose M. Ditto and other officers for the 2008-2010 administration.

Carriker is the president of the Winston-Salem Junior Woman's Club, Jobe is the club's secretary and GFWC-NC Junior Membership chairwoman, and Sizemore is the club's treasurer and chairwoman of the District 4 & GFWC-NC Jr. Education Department.
