LANSING — A West Jefferson teenager died late Wednesday night in a traffic accident on N.C. 194, according to the state Highway Patrol.
Corey Lynn Dugger, 19, was traveling north in his Acura Integra shortly after 11 p.m. when he tried to pass a Ford Ranger driven by Travis Stewart, 30, of Crumpler, authorities said. As Dugger went around and tried to get back in his lane, the rear of his car clipped the front end of the truck, said Trooper C.J. Blankenship. Dugger's car went off the right shoulder and hit an embankment, then went airborne, hit a utility pole and overturned before landing on its roof.
Dugger was dead at the scene, authorities said. He was wearing a seatbelt.
The speed limit is 55 mph. The Highway Patrol estimates that Dugger's car was traveling about 75 to 80 mph at impact. No charges have been filed against Stewart.
