Sheriff Andy Stokes of Davie County said yesterday that investigators have talked with a Clemmons dentist about the death of his wife on Wednesday.
No charges have been filed.
The dentist, Kirk Alan Turner, is being treated at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after being found injured at the couple's home Wednesday night. Hospital officials said they could provide no information about his condition.
Stokes offered some details during a press conference yesterday about what investigators found, but he offered little other information about what happened between Kirk and Jennifer Turner. The couple had split up, and Kirk Turner had recently filed for divorce.
Stokes said that deputies found Jennifer Turner, 54, dead with knife wounds in a workshop on the couple's 35-acre property at 627 Jack Booe Road, a few miles north of Mocksville. Kirk Turner also had knife wounds.
Capt. J.D. Hartman, who is leading the homicide investigation, declined to say how Jennifer Turner ended up in the workshop with her estranged husband or what happened between them.
Deputies responded to a disturbance call about 9:45 p.m. The call was made after Kirk Turner went to the house to collect items from the workshop, about 300 feet from the house, authorities said. He came with a friend, who stayed in the car.
Stokes said Thursday that the couple had an agreement not to be around each other, and that Jennifer Turner didn't expect her estranged husband to come by the house Wednesday night.
Stokes said that after Kirk Turner arrived, there was some kind of argument and that knives were involved. No one else was in the workshop with the Turners, authorities said.
Stokes said that the friend who was with Kirk Turner called 911. The sheriff's office declined to release the 911 tape after consulting with the district attorney's office.
The sheriff's office is awaiting autopsy results, Stokes said. The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Davie County Sheriff's Office.
The couple had been separated for more than a year. Jennifer Turner had filed for post-separation support and attorney fees in June 2006, according to court papers. The couple married in 1984 and have two adult children.
Sally W. Smith, Jennifer Turner's attorney, e-mailed a statement yesterday.
"I am shocked and horrified by the death of my client, Jennifer Turner," Smith wrote. "She was a wonderful woman to work with, and I will miss her greatly. I hope that all of our community will hold Jennifer, her daughter, her son, her parents and siblings in their prayers during the very difficult days to come."
She declined to comment further.
The couple's break-up was acrimonious. They accused each other of cheating, according to court records. In a civil suit asking for financial support, Jennifer Turner alleged that her husband had threatened her life. Her husband denied those allegations in his response. There is no record of her having filed for a restraining order against her husband.
Stokes said that the sheriff's office had responded to at least one domestic call at that address in the past year. He declined to comment further.
Stokes said that the sheriff's office is taking its time with the investigation to make sure that it's thorough.
"We're just not going to rush to judgment on this thing," he said.
