Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden in Kernersville has named Ruth Prongay as its director of development. Prongay will direct fundraising efforts to benefit garden projects and help to secure garden sponsorships and grants. Before joining the garden, Prongay was a broker and Realtor at Prudential Carolinas Realty. She previously owned and operated a corporate-meeting and event-planning business. She has more than 25 years' experience in sales.Hugh B. Wellons has joined the law firm of Spilman Thomas & Battle PLLC as a member in the corporate department. He will be the co-chairman of the firm's community banking practice group. Wellons has 25 years of experience in areas such as banking and finance, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, securities and regulatory compliance, and technology law. He advises a wide range of businesses, including large public companies and small closely held businesses.The Bloom Agency, a full-service marketing agency, recently hired Amanda Marshall as an account manager. She will be the primary point of contact for several agency clients, including Grayson National Bank, as well as hold project management responsibilities for other clients. Marshall has a background in account service and financial services marketing. Before joining The Bloom Agency, Marshall was an assistant account executive for Mullen in Winston Salem.Ashley Dillon was recently promoted to senior account executive at Woodbine in Winston-Salem. She joined the agency in 2008 as an account coordinator and then advanced to account executive. Vanessa Boynton, who joined the agency in 2011 as its social media manager, recently became the digital engagement manager. She now works in the marketing/public relations department and digital department at the agency.Peter Mitchell, chief executive of Woodbine, was recently a judge for two national marketing competitions: the annual Effie Awards, which were founded in 1968 by the American Marketing Association and take place in New York, and Wake Forest University's Marketing Case Competition, which was a component of the university's 2012 Marketing Summit. This was Mitchell's seventh year evaluating work for the Effies.Mike Horn, a partner in Vela Strategic Marketing & Public Relations, has been chosen to judge the American Advertising Federation's Addy Award West Coast District 14th competition in Reno, Nev. The Addy Awards are annual competitions sanctioned by the AAF to recognize excellence in advertising. This will be the 19th year Horn has been chosen as an Addy judge. He has judged more than 30 local, regional and national Addy competitions.The North Carolina Global Logistics Alliance, a newly established logistics association, has chosen C. David Hauser as its chairman and executive director. Hauser is the former founding executive director of the North Carolina Center for Global Logistics. The alliance, based in Winston-Salem, was founded by a group of Piedmont-Triad business executives. It plans to first focus on reimplementing the Logistics Roundtable established under the region's Workforce Innovations in Regional Economic Development grant.The Bloom Agency has been chosen by the International Academy of Visual Arts to receive a W3 Silver Award for website design and development. The winning website, www.primowater.com, was created by The Bloom Agency for Primo Water, based in Winston-Salem. This is The Bloom Agency's second consecutive year to be recognized by The International Academy of Visual Arts W3 Awards Program.Ellen Bassett has received the 2011 All Star Award from Constant Contact Inc. Each year, a select group of Constant Contact customers is honored with the All Star Award for exemplary marketing results. Bassett Creative Services' results ranked among the top 10 percent of Constant Contact's customer base. Bassett is the founder of Bassett Creative Services, a local advertising agency.Latino Community Credit Union, based in Durham, has been recognized for its service to underserved populations by the Credit Union National Association and Credit Union Times. LCCU was awarded CUNA's Desjardin Adult Financial Education Award and the Credit Union Times Trailblazer Award for Service to the Underserved. The Desjardin Adult Financial Education Award recognizes leadership in financial literacy among credit unions. LCCU offers a free financial literacy program that includes workshops on a range of topics.Jane Page, owner of Page & Associates in Kernersville, is among 12 national finalists for Contractor of the Year 2012, sponsored by Caterpillar, a construction-equipment manufacturer, and Equipment World construction-trade magazine. Each Contractor of the Year finalist is chosen based on company achievements, endorsements from customers and vendors and the company's contributions to the construction industry. Page & Associates specializes in commercial building and utility-construction projects.The National Association of Health Underwriters has announced that the N.C. Association of Health Underwriters has qualified to receive the Blue Ribbon of Excellence. This recognition means the state chapter and all its locals are Silver or Gold Certified. Only eight other states have received this recognition. To earn the Blue Ribbon of Excellence, every chapter within the state needs to qualify for the Silver, Gold or Platinum Certification.</ul

Whitney Jones Inc. has named Terri Dillon vice president of client services. Dillon was a Whitney Jones consultant on the $27 million Comprehensive Campaign for the Arts when she joined The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County as vice president of development in 2009. She is now resuming her relationship with Whitney Jones Inc. In addition to consulting with nonprofit clients, she will be responsible for marketing the firm.Bill Rouse, a Realtor, has joined Leonard Ryden Burr as a real-estate sales associate specializing in residential sales. He has more than 25 years of experience in the real-estate business as a former custom-home builder and land developer with expertise in green/sustainable building and energy solutions. Dana McCormick-Nommsen, a Realtor, also has joined Leonard Ryden Burr as a real-estate agent specializing in residential sales. A transplant from California, she has moved with her family seven times.Beverly "Bev" Sanford, president and chief executive of SciWorks since 1996, will retire from the nonprofit organization at the end of June. Before coming to SciWorks, Sanford was vice president of programs and education at Discovery Place in Charlotte. The SciWorks board of directors has retained the executive search firm of Baker and Associates LLC for a nationwide search to find Sanford's replacement. The board hopes to have a replacement by July 1.George K. Walker Florist was recently awarded an FTD Quality Star rating for all of 2011. The rating is re-evaluated each four-month directory cycle, and George K. Walker Florist met this designation's criteria. The award means that a flower shop fulfilled and delivered its FTD orders in a timely manner during each four-month cycle. Plus, the quality of the orders filled resulted in a low refund rate.Elizabeth Albertson, a urological surgeon with Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, was honored with the February Service Spotlight Award presented by Edgepark Medical Supplies. She will have $500 donated in her name to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. The award recognizes health care professionals across the United States who have exhibited uncommon dedication to ensure their patients' care, comfort and peace of mind.Robert P. Stowe was recently inducted into the International College of Dentists based on his contributions to the art and science and general welfare of the dental profession. Stowe is a partner in the dental practice of Drs. Pruitt Miller Stowe Steinbicker and Taylor DDS in Winston-Salem.Jerry Hardesty of Winston-Salem recently received the Lois G. Britt Service Award, presented by the N.C. Pork Council, at the N.C. Pork Conference. He was an extension director in Currituck County for 23 years and in Forsyth County for seven years. After his retirement, Hardesty worked with the N.C. Pork Council as an educational liaison.P. Gregory "Greg" Wilson of Winston-Salem has earned the title of Top Overall Producer for the Triad office of CBRE, a commercial real-estate services firm, for 2011. The award is based on highest dollar volume generated in commercial real estate transactions. The Triad office of CBRE covers Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point and surrounding areas. Wilson also was recognized as the Second Top Overall Producer for the CBRE Mid-South region. The CBRE Mid-South region consists of the Triad and Raleigh offices in North Carolina, as well as Hampton Roads, Richmond and Charlottesville offices in Virginia.Tim Ebert of Ebert Financial has qualified for membership in the 2012 Million-Dollar Round Table. Attaining membership in MDRT is achieved by less than 1 percent of the world's life insurance and financial services professionals. It requires Ebert to adhere to a strict code of ethics, focus on providing top-notch client service and continue to grow professionally through involvement in at least one other industry association.Attorney Paul Foley has been named one of the "Triad's 40 Leaders Under 40" by the Triad Business Journal. The award honors the "best and brightest leaders" in the Triad. Foley was chosen for being a rising leader at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton and in Winston-Salem. He focuses on corporate and securities law, including the representation of corporations, limited-liability companies and limited partnerships.Thomas H. Hughes/Architecture P.C. was recently hired by EDENS of Columbia, S.C., to provide the design and construction documents for the new Sally Beauty tenant upfit at Festival Centre in Hilton Head, S.C. The work for the 1,475-square-foot tenant space includes reconfiguration of the interior to suit the needs of Sally Beauty. Construction will be completed by the spring of this year.

The Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools 2012 High School Academic Competition has started. The Competition brings students from the district's high schools face-to-face to answer questions in the categories of English, mathematics, science, social studies and general knowledge.

Rayford K. "Trip" Adams III recently joined the law firm of Spilman Thomas & Battle PLLC at its Winston-Salem office. Adams will lead the firm's bankruptcy/creditors' rights practice in North Carolina. His primary areas of practice are bankruptcy, creditors' rights, and commercial disputes and workouts. He has more than 30 years of experience in all aspects of bankruptcy matters. Adams teaches bankruptcy law at Elon University.Helen Gwyn has been promoted to accredited senior gemologist with the Association of Gemological appraisers and a senior member with the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers. She has 25 years of experience and is responsible for insurance appraisals for several jewelry stores in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
