Kids can wear pajamas for 'Pillow Pops' performance

The Philharmonia of Greensboro will present "Pillow Pops" at 2 p.m. Feb. 5 at the Bur-Mil Park Clubhouse, 5834 Bur-Mil Club Road, Greensboro. The performance is part of the OPUS Concert Series.

Under the direction of Robert Gutter, the orchestra will join dancers from the North Carolina Dance Project; the theme is Music and Animals.

The program will include Camille Saint-Saens' "Carnival of the Animals" and Sergei Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf," both narrated by Peter Perret.

Children are encouraged to wear pajamas and bring a pillow and blanket. The concert is free to the public.

Trio to perform Villa-Lobos, Brahms and Roussel

The Fire Pink Trio will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Watson Hall on UNC School of the Arts campus. The trio features Jacquelyn Bartlett on the harp, Sheila Browne on viola and Debra Reuter-Pivetta on the flute.

They will be assisted by Joseph Genualdi, violin, and Evan Richey, cello. The performance will include music by Villa-Lobos, Brahms and Roussel.

Admission is $15 or $13 for seniors and students.

Bring your guitar for Piedmont ensemble

The Piedmont Guitar Orchestra will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays beginning this week at the Scales Fine Arts Center, Wake Forest University.

The ensemble is open to the public, but participants must own a nylon-string guitar and be able to read music. A $60 registration fee is required.

Songwriters invited to enter Chris Austin contest

The deadline for entries for the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest is Feb. 18. The contest provides aspiring songwriters an opportunity to have their original songs heard by music-industry songwriters and professionals. The contest will be held during MerleFest 25 at Wilkes Community College in April.

The songwriting contest recognizes winners in four categories: country, bluegrass, gospel/inspirational and general. To be eligible, a songwriter must not derive more than 50 percent of his or her total income from songwriting or music publishing.
