Explore Islamic faith through football team
The film "Fordson: Faith, Fasting, Football" will be shown at 7:45 p.m. today at Aperture Cinema, 311 W. Fourth St. The screening is the first of four films in the Cultural Connections film series. It is co-sponsored by the Human Relations Commission, the Community Mosque of Winston-Salem and the Annoor Islamic Center of Clemmons.
The documentary depicts a community holding to its Islamic faith while struggling for acceptance in post-9/11 America. It follows the Fordson High School football team, a predominately Arab-American team from a working-class Detroit suburb, as they practice during the last 10 days of Ramadan for a game with their big cross-town rival.

'Ice Age' showing will warm hearts
The Surry Arts Council will show "Ice Age" at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Thursday at the Earle Theatre, 142 N. Main St., Mount Airy.
The family film follows Paleolithic mammals attempting to return a human baby to its parents. The film features the voices of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo and Denis Leary.
The screening is free, but registration is required.

UNCSA to shine at Sundance
Craig Zobel and Michael Sledd, alumni of UNC School of the Arts School of Filmmaking, will return to the Sundance Film Festival with films selected in out-of-competition categories.
"Compliance," written and directed by Zobel, was selected for the NEXT category, and "Robot and Frank," with Sledd as production manager, was selected for the Premieres category. The festival is Jan. 19-29 in Park City, Utah.
Other UNCSA ties to "Compliance" include David Gordon Green as executive producer; Lisa Muskat, a former faculty member, as producer; Adam Stone as cinematographer; Jane Rizzo as editor; Will Files as sound re-recording mixer; Christof Gebert as sound mixer; and Michael Abbott Jr. appears in the film as Officer Jimmy Palmer.
Also, "The Severe Psychosis of a Musiclessman," a film by UNCSA film students, will be screened in the noncompetitive Anarchy Shorts category at Slamdance. The students are Ian McClerin, director; Matt Gomez, screenwriter; Dylan Gravley, producer; Daniel Satinoff, cinematographer; Taylor Sommers, production designer; Matthew Gorbachov, editor; and Daniel Anderegg, composer.
Gravley, a native of Mount Airy, is the first student filmmaker to be recognized by the Producers Guild of America for producing a film in a way that is earth-friendly.
