Theater Briefs: 'Romeo and Juliet' for Valentine's Day

The Barter Players will perform "Romeo and Juliet" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Earle Theatre, 142 N. Main St., Mount Airy.

"Romeo and Juliet" is the tragic love story by William Shakespeare about star-crossed lovers who are kept apart by their feuding families.

Puppets, humans make a funny musical

The Theatre Alliance will perform "Avenue Q" at 8 p.m. Friday at the Theatre Alliance playhouse, 1047 Northwest Blvd.

"Avenue Q" is a musical comedy about puppets and humans living together in the tradition of "Sesame Street." The play features strong language and adult situations, and is recommended for mature audiences.

Additional showtimes are 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22-25, Feb. 29, March 1-3; and 2 p.m. Feb. 19, Feb. 26 and March 4. Tickets are $16 or $14 for students and seniors.

Monologue presentation will benefit all women

Students from Salem College will perform "The Vagina Monologues" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at the Salem Fine Arts Center, 601 S. Church St.

"The Vagina Monologues," originally written and performed by playwright Eve Ensler, are based on interviews with women of different ages, nationalities, ethnicities and circumstances.

Tickets are $10 or $8 for students. Proceeds will benefit Family Services Inc. and the international V-Day Campaign to end violence against women and girls.

Teen Theatre presents hip-hop musical

The Teen Theatre Ensemble of The North Carolina Black Repertory Company will present "By a Black Hand" at 10 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Arts Council Theatre, 610 Coliseum Drive.

The hip-hop musical presents enlightening facts about black innovators whose creations are used every day. Tickets are $8. Call (336) 723-2266.

Caldcleugh students to present 'Ben's Trumpet'

Students of the Caldcleugh After School Arts program will perform "Ben's Trumpet" at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Caldcleugh Multicultural Arts Center, 1700 Orchard St., Greensboro.

Set in 1920s Harlem, "Ben's Trumpet" is about boy whose love for the trumpet earns him a special gift from a neighborhood jazz musician.

Tickets are $3 or $1 for children.

'Macbeth' featured at South Stoke High

The North Carolina Shakespeare Festival will perform William Shakespeare's tragedy "Macbeth" at 7 p.m. Saturday at South Stokes High School Auditorium, 1100 S. Stokes School Road, Walnut Cove.

"Macbeth" is a tragic tale of a war hero who rises to the throne after assassinating the king and must learn to live with his actions.

Tickets are $14, $12 for seniors and $10 for Stokes County Arts Council members and students.
