Writers' Notebook: Best-selling author to read, sign book

Author Eleanor Brown will read and sign copies of her book "The Weird Sisters" at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Reynolda Manor Library, 2839 Fairlawn Drive.

"The Weird Sisters" is a story of three sisters who have found tragedy in their lives and are reunited by the deteriorating health of their mother. The book has become a New York Times best-seller and was a book club favorite in 2011.

There will be a question-and-answer session following the discussion. Admission is free to the public.

'Schoolhouse' author to visit senior center

Stephanie Deutsch, author and former journalist, will discuss her book, "You Need a Schoolhouse: Booker T. Washington, Julius Rosenwald and the Building of Schools for the Segregated South," at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Walnut Cove Senior Citizens Center, 308 Brook St.

The book describes the relationship between Washington and Rosenwald that resulted in the construction of more than 5,000 schools for black students in 15 Southern states.

Poetry submissions near March 1 deadline

Submissions for the 2012 Statewide Poetry Contest are being accepted until March 1.

Entries should be typed and no longer than four pages. Entrants may submit up to three poems. Winners will be announced on April 11 at N.C. State University.

In addition to a $500 grand prize, four honorable mentions will be chosen, and special prizes will be awarded to undergraduate and graduate-student winners.

Poetry entries should be submitted to: NCSU Poetry Contest, Campus Box 8105, English Department, N.C. State University, Raleigh, NC 27695-8105.

Jarrell poetry contest open to all residents

The North Carolina Writers' Network is accepting submissions for the Randall Jarrell Poetry Competition. The competition is open to all legal residents of North Carolina or members of the North Carolina Writers' Network. The winner will receive $200 and be published in "Crucible." The winner will also read the poem during UNC Greensboro's Founders Day activities.

Submissions should be one poem only, with a 40-line limit, and must be postmarked by March 1. The submission fee is $15 for nonmembers or $10 for members.

Nontraditional styles welcome in poetry contest

The Charlotte Writers' Club is sponsoring its Deane Ritch Lomax Poetry Prize. Poets from North and South Carolina are encouraged to submit traditional and nontraditional styles of poetry (no haiku poems).

First-place winners will receive $100, second place $50, third place $25 and there will be three honorable-mention awards. Submissions must be postmarked by March 20. The winners will be announced in May. There is a $5 submission fee for members and $10 for nonmembers.
