Culinary conference to have reception open to public

The American Culinary Federation Southeast Conference will include a reception open to the public when it comes to Winston-Salem Feb. 19-22.

The opening reception Feb. 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. will include a dinner of hot wings and ribs as well as live entertainment. Admission includes a raffle ticket for a new Gibson Flying V electric guitar signed by rock celebrities.

The American Culinary Federation is a professional association for chefs. The reception is a fundraiser for the organization's Chef and Child Foundation, which teaches nutrition to children, and for the childhood hunger programs of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina.

Center planning Mardi Gras dinner

The Enrichment Center will hold Mardi Gras at Millennium at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Millennium Center downtown.

The fundraising event will include cocktails, dinner, live music, live and silent auctions, and a parade of Mardi Gras floats.

Dinner will be authentic Louisiana cuisine prepared by the Jambalaya Crew of Gonzales, La.

The dinner will benefit the Enrichment Center, a nonprofit that offers arts, academic and other programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Westbend introducing four craft beers

Westbend Vineyards in Lewisville is now Westbend Vineyards and Brewhouse.

Westbend will release its first beers during a grand opening of its brewery from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Westbend is releasing four craft beers. Admission to the grand opening is free and includes a souvenir glass, live music and wine or beer tasting.

The event also will include the release of the 2009 Merlot and a tasting of specialty chocolates.

Other food will be for sale.

Westbend is at 5394 Williams Road in Lewisville.

National Truffle Fest will be in Asheville

The National Truffle Fest will be held Feb. 23 through 25 in Asheville, to celebrate one of the valued types of mushrooms.

The festival features leading chefs preparing dishes with a variety of American and European truffles, including Black Perigord, Bianchetti, Oregon Black and Oregon White.

A variety of events will take place at area restaurants. Packages are available with or without accommodations. Costs vary.

The festival is a fundraiser for the Frankie Lemmon School and Development Center, a North Carolina nonprofit that serves special-needs children.
