WFU professor to discuss new book
Gregory Parks, a Wake Forest University School of Law assistant professor and co-editor of the new book "Alpha Phi Alpha: A Legacy of Greatness, the Demands of Transcendence," will be discussing his work from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Z. Smith Reynolds Library Auditorium on campus.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. The discussion is free to the public.

2 authors to present books at Barnhill's on Saturday
Two authors will showcase their books Saturday at Barnhill's Books-Wine-Art-Gifts, 811 Burke St.
Faith A. Copley will present her book, "My Life in Mortgage Banking," from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Susan Surman will be signing copies of her latest novel, "Dancing at all the Weddings," from 2 to 4 p.m. Both events are free to the public.

Betts fiction prize applications accepted
Applications for the Doris Betts Fiction Prize are being accepted by the North Carolina Writers' Network until Feb. 15.
Entries should be unpublished short stories up to 6,000 words; only one entry per writer. The author of the winning story, which will be published in the "North Carolina Literary Review," will receive $250.
The competition is open to any writer who is a legal resident of the state or a member of the North Carolina Writers' Network. "North Carolina Literary Review" subscribers with North Carolina connections are also eligible.
The entry fee is $20 or $10 for network members.

Groups band together on historical essays
The Winston-Salem Writers and Preserve Historic Forsyth are accepting submissions for their simultaneous "Illuminating Preservation" essay contests until Feb. 24.
Both essay contests are designed to complement each other and cover the historic preservation of Forsyth County.
Preserve Historic Forsyth will award prizes of $50, $100 and $200 for the best essays on how historic preservation can be used to socially, physically, economically and politically improve the community. The essays can be 100 words or fewer.
Entries for the Winston-Salem Writers contest are limited to 750 words and can be expansions of ideas submitted to the Preserve Historic Forsyth contest. The winning essay will be published in the upcoming anthology, "Taking Flight 2012."
Both winners will be announced at the Preserve Historic Forsyth annual meeting on March 31.
