"The Parting" will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Southern Center for Contemporary Art, 750 Marguerite Drive. The film is by Alex Moratto, a UNC School of the Arts School of Filmmaking alumnus. Admission is free.

"The Parting" is about a Latino immigrant living in North Carolina with his 10-year-old son. Unable to provide for the boy, he is faced with a choice: to either send his son away to live with a distant relative or to embrace his duties as a father. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles. It was filmed in Winston-Salem and features an all-Latino cast of local, nonprofessional actors. Following the screening, there will be an open discussion with the filmmaker and the actors. A movie trailer can be seen at http://vimeo.com/29800976.
