Wake Forest University art students and Winston-Salem high school students will present collaborative art works on racial identity and diversity at a free one-night showing from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Liberty Arts Center, 526 N. Liberty St.

Kyle Bell and Jean Jacques Martinod, film students at the UNC School of the Arts, will show raw footage from a documentary they are making on the project.

The exhibition, "The Big Tent: Transforming Race," is a project in its second year of the Kenan Institute for the Arts' ACCORD Initiative, in partnership with the City of Winston-Salem Human Relations Department and the WFU art department. ACCORD is an acronym for the Artists Contributing to Civic-Oriented and Responsive Democracy.

The WFU students are Carolyn Elliott, Bentrice Jusu, Charles Ramsey, Alison Ringwood, Teressa Ross, Jordan Van Horn, Hannah Whitaker, and De'Noia Woods. The high school students are Latiyonna Manns, Carver High School; Liz Olson, the Career Center; Dianna Graham and Reginald Gravely, Early College of Forsyth; Kimberly Mayes, East Forsyth High School; Tiffany Richmond, Glenn High School; Jimmie Jeter, North Forsyth High School; Tai Hensely, Parkland High School; Jamese Lewis, Reagan High School; Jesse Berry, West Forsyth High School; and Jakkia Taylor, Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy.

The show will tour high schools throughout the county for a year. As part of the traveling exhibition, a tent will be created in which to display the art.

'BESTiary' exhibit of sculptures on view

The Gateway Gallery of The Enrichment Center will open its exhibition "BESTiary" with a free reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday. The Center's Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Aaron Bachelder, will provide live music.

"BESTiary" is composed of fantastical soft sculptures by Ian Dennis. Large-scale, mixed-media animals and flowers are by the Artists of Gateway Studios. The member artists are Victoria Allen, Marcie Haley, Kenyanna Higgins, Meredith Lamy, Amber Lawson, Walker Lewis Jr. and Paul Quinn. The exhibition will be on view through July 16.

Village Smith Galleries showing pastels, oils

Village Smith Galleries in Reynolda Village will celebrate its new exhibition with a free reception from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

On view through June 15 will be landscape pastels by Fran Speight and oil paintings by Diana Kelly. The works will be on view through June 15.
