Q: We have out-of-state guests coming in mid- to late May. Is there a calendar of events for this area to help us plan for entertaining them? Of course, we know about Old Salem, Bethabara and so on, and we'll take advantage of that. But we'd like to know about plays, musicals, etc., or festival-type events. When we check ads, the dates of the events are all in this month or April.

A: Some schedules haven't been finalized this far in advance, but you can find some possibilities online at various web sites, including our own. You can also check each week's Relish, in today's paper and available separately on racks downtown.
At events.journalnow.com, you can search for events by a range of dates. Another schedule can be found in the "Events Calendar" section of VisitWinstonSalem.com.
Here are some of the events coming up in mid- to late May that we found on those two sites:
The Lake Eden Arts Festival, May 12-15 in Black Mountain; Greek Festival 2011, May 13-15 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on Keating Drive; a production of "The Glass Menagerie" at Hanesbrands Theatre, May 13-19; "Beethoven and You" audience choice night at the Winston-Salem Symphony, May 14 at the Stevens Center; Blue Points 5K on the Runway, May 14 at Piedmont Triad International Airport, a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society; a performance by Arturo Sandoval with the Piedmont Wind Symphony, May 19 at Brendle Recital Hall; a visit to Old Salem by George Washington re-enactor Dean Malissa, who will be recreating Washington's famous 1791 visit to Salem, on May 21; and festivals including the Old Salem Pottery Fair, the Yadkin Valley Wine Festival in Elkin and the Mosaic Festival in Greensboro, all on May 21. There are also games being played by the Winston-Salem Dash at BB&T Ballpark during that time, May 16-22 and 30-31.
And that is just a sampling; there are plenty more options, depending on your interests and how far from Winston-Salem you plan to take your guests. You should find plenty to do.
Q: Was the little fashion designer character in the Disney movie "The Incredibles" based on the lady who plays Hetty on "NCIS: Los Angeles"?
J.L.
A: Brad Bird, the cartoonist who created "The Incredibles" — and who provides the voice of Edna Mode, the bombastic, diminutive scene-stealing character — has been cagey about her origins. Linda Hunt, the actress you are referring to, is one possibility who has been frequently mentioned.
But the character seems more directly inspired by Edith Head, a famous Hollywood fashion designer who won eight Oscar awards for best costume design and was nominated 35 times. Other possible inspirations include Lotte Lenya, who played a Bond villain in the movie "From Russia With Love," and fashion designers Anna Wintour and Mary Quant. In a 2004 article in Entertainment Weekly, Bird commented, "I've heard, like, 15 different people she reminds people of."
