Music Briefs: 3 from UNCSA named finalists

Three music students from UNC School of the Arts have been named finalists in the first Rosen-Schaffel Young Artists Competition.

The finalists are singer Katherine Ardoin, cellist Louise Grevin and saxophonist Benjamin Robinette. They will compete in the competition's finals at 1 p.m. July 24 in Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University as part of the Appalachian Summer Festival in Boone.

The winner of the competition will receive $1,500 and an invitation to perform with the Eastern Festival Orchestra at next year's festival.

Young is named Salem Band's director

Eileen Young will become the music director of the Salem Band in September.

Young will replace Jeff Whitsett, who is retiring. She is also a clarinetist in the Winston-Salem Symphony and an instructor at Wake Forest University.
