Uncorked: N.C. Wine of the Month
Wine: New River Back Porch Blueberry
Cost: $20.
Review: New River Winery's Back Porch Blueberry is almost certain to defy expectations. In this case, that's a good thing. This wine has a bit of sugar, 1.5 percent, but tastes virtually dry. People expecting a sweet dessert wine are bound to be surprised. Sure, it smells like blueberries, but in an unusually delicate way, with hints of cocoa. The fruit is light but distinct on the palate. Best of all, it's well-balanced, and its relatively high acidity makes it food friendly. Like many North Carolina wines, it's comparatively pricey. But this is a wine you'd have a hard time finding elsewhere. It may be unique. It's certainly intriguing. New River uses only Ashe County blueberries in the wine. On the bottle label, the winery suggests drinking it with chocolate, cheese and rich cakes. It paired well with mild havarti cheese, and even with a hamburger. It also should go nicely with pork. Available at the winery and in Winston-Salem at Barnhill's bookstore and City Beverage. For information, visit www.
