WGHP will start 2011 with a new secondary channel of classic TV, movies

»  Comments | Post a Comment

On Saturday, WGHP will kick off the New Year with a new channel.

"TV 8.2" is described as "a classic television and general entertainment movie network" that will include movies and classic TV shows such as "Three's Company," "All in the Family," "Sanford and Son," "Benny Hill," "Maude," "The Nanny," "Dennis the Menace," "The Donna Reed Show" and "Married with Children."

It will be shown over the air as a digital broadcast on WGHP's secondary channel, 8.2, and is available on Time Warner Cable as digital Channel 126.

Saturday's debut will kick off with a "Three Stooges" New Year's Day marathon, followed on Sunday by a "Benny Hill" marathon.

Full program listings will be available at www.myfox8wghp.com.

Speaking of the new year, it's time to look back on some of the best and the worst of TV this year.

One of the year's best new entries was "The Walking Dead," a well-written, atmospheric drama about the end of civilization and the survivors trying to make their way through zombie hordes in a quest for safety.

The only problem was that AMC didn't have enough faith in the show to order more than six episodes. The network made up for it, though, with a 13-episode order for the second season, which will likely hit the air in the fall. Sadly, though, former Winston-Salem resident Jeryl Prescott Sales won't be along for the ride in that second season.

Cable had a number of strong new shows this year, including "Boardwalk Empire" with Steve Buscemi; the New Orleans drama "Treme"; and FX's "Justified" and "Terriers," the latter of which sadly never caught on with a wide audience and was canceled.

Some people were infuriated by the series finale of "Lost," but I enjoyed the mix of nostalgia, mystery and warm fuzziness. Did you expect a resolution that appealed to everyone?

And the Jay Leno/Conan O'Brien wars resulted in separate shows for both hosts. Now that that's over, I can go back to watching "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" and "The Colbert Report" instead of either of them.

Now that the year's biggest holiday is behind us, it's time to look ahead. On Tuesday, Warner Home Video is releasing "A Charlie Brown Valentine," a DVD with the Peanuts gang commemorating the most romantic of holidays.

Also new on Tuesday is "Archer: Season One," FX's addictive animated series about neurotic secret agents working for a top-secret organization but constantly stabbing one another in the back rather than fighting the forces of evil. The cast includes H. Jon Benjamin as Sterling Archer, the organization's answer to James Bond; Jessica Walter as his chronically needy, passive-aggressive mother and boss; Aisha Tyler as Lana, an agent who once dated Sterling; and Chris Parnell, an alumnus of the UNC School of the Arts, as Cyril, a nerdy comptroller and another of Lana's exes.

And if that's not enough for you, Tuesday will see the release of season two of the critically acclaimed cable drama "The United States of Tara" and the not-nearly-so-acclaimed reality show "Jersey Shore."
