Student wins district spelling bee with 'hysterical'

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A Jefferson Middle School student spelled "hysterical" correctly to clinch the final round of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Spelling Bee today.

Seventh grader Adelaide Campbell will advance to the regional bee to be held on March 18, which will pit students from across the Piedmont.

Friday's local bee came down to Campbell and Emily Morgan, a Hanes Magnet School eighth grader. Campbell spelled "quarantine" and then "hysterical" for the win.

Pau Simiyu, an East Forsyth sixth grader, finished third out of 55 students in the bee. The regional bee, sponsored by the Winston-Salem Journal, will be held at the Milton Rhodes Arts Center. It will be broadcast for the first time through Time Warner Cable's On Demand service starting March 25.

Roughly 30 bee champions from across the region are expected to participate.
