UNCSA graduate wins Emmy

Mount Airy native Zach Seivers, a 2006 alumnus of the School of Filmmaking at UNC School of the Arts, has won an Emmy award for outstanding sound editing for nonfiction programming, namely "Gettysburg" (History Channel).

"It feels great," he said. "It's a huge honor."

"The Primetime Emmy Awards" ceremony will be broadcast live from Los Angeles beginning at 8 p.m. tonight on the Fox Television Network. Some awards for creative and technical categories, including the one won by Seivers, were announced during the "Creative Arts Emmy" ceremony, which was held Sept. 10 in Los Angeles.

Jordan Kerner, the dean of filmmaking at UNCSA, called Seivers' Emmy win a source of pride and affirmation.

"Zach is an artist at the top of his game at a very young age," he said. "This award is further evidence that the film and television industry leaders recognize and appreciate the astonishing skills of our alumni."

About five years ago, Seivers moved to Los Angeles and started SNAPSOUND, a post-production sound company. He was only 22 at the time and had just finished UNCSA.

Filmmakers "didn't necessarily trust that I could do the job," he said. "Now, having to prove that is going to be a lot easier."

Seivers was the sound designer on "Gettysburg." He shares his award with sound editors Charles Maynes, who was a guest artist in the School of Filmmaking in January 2006, and Brent Kiser.

Seivers holds a bachelor's degree from UNCSA, where he studied such subjects as sound mixing, sound recording and sound editing with David Lewis Yewdall, who is now retired. Seivers called Yewdall "absolutely instrumental in my wanting to do sound and also in my success."

"I looked right at him and knew this was going to be someone special," Yewdall said, recalling his first encounter with Seivers. "He was my best student ever."
