"Your Highness" pays homage to many fantasy films of the past. One example is a mechanical sidekick bird, Simon, that is a tribute to Bubo, the clockwork owl from the 1981 film "Clash of the Titans."
"Seeing that owl in 'Clash of the Titans,' I wanted that," Danny McBride recalled. "So selfishly, you write things like Simon in this movie knowing that someone's going to have to build that and that there's a good chance you're going to be able to take it home with you."
And he did.
Bubo was largely missing from the 2010 remake of "Clash of the Titans," which was co-written by another UNCSA alum, Travis Beacham. McBride said that he was happy that Beacham left Bubo out of the remake; otherwise, there might have been too many mechanical birds flapping around at the same time.
