Boba House

332 Tate St., Greensboro.

Phone: 336-379-7444. $-$$. BW.

If you're a vegetarian or vegan, this is heaven. If you're not, but you favor Asian soups, noodles, curries and stir fry, this cozy, completely meat-free restaurant is worth trying.

Full Moon Oyster Bar and Seafood Kitchen

1473 River Ridge Drive, Clemmons.

Phone: 712-8200. $$$. BW.

Oysters on the half shell, steamed shrimp, Alaskan king crab, snow crab, scallops and clams, by the dozen, peck and pound.

La Botana

1547 Hanes Mall Blvd. (Kester Mill Village).

Phone: 768-6588. $$. ABC.

The usual faijitas and such, but also more authentic Mexican fare off the regular menu, such as chicken and enchiladas in deep red mole; chunky guacamole "regional"; tacos filled with chopped steak, bacon and green onions. Lots for vegetarians.

Mary's Of Course

301 Brookstown Ave.

Phone: 725-5764. $.

It's a joy to taste what's on chef and owner Mary Haglund's mind and her specials board: chilled fruit soup, crab-cake eggs Benedict, vegetarian this and that. Sunday brunch is legendary, but come with the newspaper and be prepared to get in line.

Meridian

411 N. Marshall St.

Phone: 722-8889. $$$$. ABC.

A constantly changing, heavily seasonal menu makes Meridian's hefty prices a little easier to swallow. This high-end restaurant has also jumped on the local-food-movement bandwagon. Most of the food is solid if not outrageously inventive.

New Town Bistro and Bar

420-U Jonestown Road.

Phone: 659-8062. $$. ABC.

New Town loves to change its menu regularly, so it's hard to pinpoint dishes that are always around. Beware the "seasonal" claim, though: when I was there in August, many fruits and vegetables tasted and looked canned or frozen.

Putter's Patio and Grill

3005 Bonhurst Drive.

Phone: 724-9990. $$$. ABC.

Scruffy atmosphere, scrumptious steaks, no pretense. Try the golf balls (small fried potatoes).

Sweet Potatoes

529 N. Trade St.

Phone: 727-4844. $$. ABC.

Sultry Southern cooking in downtown's Arts District. Jazz, lazy ceiling fans, fried okra and green tomatoes, and sweet potato everything.
