Nathan Gunn, a famed baritone singer of opera and other fare, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Wait Chapel, as part of the Secrest Artists Series at Wake Forest University.
Gunn sings at major opera houses, including the Met, and appears as a concert soloist with orchestras around the country. He has been praised for his portrayal of the title roles in Billy Budd and Hamlet and for his performances of Mozart.
Gunn's program at WFU will feature two of Papageno's arias from Mozart's The Magic Flute, several spirituals and selections from Just before Sunrise, Gunn's recent CD. Gunn's pianist will be his wife, Julie Jordan Gunn. Both Gunns teach at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.
Tickets are $22 and $17 for seniors and non-Wake Forest students. Admission is free for Wake Forest faculty, staff and students. Call the WFU box office, open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, at 758-5295.
Richard Heard, an associate professor of music at WFU, will give a pre-performance talk at 6:40 p.m. Thursday in the Balcony Room of Wait Chapel.
Gunn will also offer a master class for selected Wake Forest voice students at 11 a.m. Friday in Brendle Recital Hall at WFU. The class is free and open to the public. For more information, call 758-5757 or 758-5295.
Note: Gunn was scheduled to perform at Wake Forest on Jan. 21. He will appear on that day with violinist Joshua Bell during a "musical soiree," which PBS will broadcast live from Lincoln Center.
