Crafts booster to speak at lunch

Joan Mondale to attend 'Six Days'

Joan Adams Mondale, who championed fine crafts while her husband, Walter Mondale, was vice president, will serve as honorary chairwoman of "Six Days in November, A Celebration of Crafts, Arts and Innovation."

The Six Days event will be presented in Winston-Salem Nov. 17-22.

Joan Mondale will be honored and make brief comments at a noon luncheon on Nov. 19. Her husband will be with her during her stay here, from Nov. 18 through Nov. 21, officials with the Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County said.

The council is serving as one of the hosts for the luncheon, which will be at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 460 N. Cherry St. The luncheon will celebrate both "Six Days in November" and the 60th anniversary of the council.

"Mrs. Mondale is revered in crafts circles for the work she has done in promoting crafts and crafts people," said Milton Rhodes, the council's president and chief executive. "Also, she played a key role in designating funds for art and design in U.S. Department of Transportation projects. We are especially conscious of this fact here in Winston-Salem, where 11 bridges on Business 40 and Highway 55 will be replaced during the next decade and citizen groups are advocating for design that enhances the City of Art and Innovation."

The centerpiece of "Six Days in November" will be the Piedmont Craftsmen's Fair, Nov. 20-22 in the Benton Convention Center, around which several performances of music, theater and dance will be presented, in addition to other activities.
