WGHP has been nominated for eight awards in the Midsouth Regional Emmy Awards, the most of any TV station in the Piedmont Triad.
WGHP's nominations were for news excellence; continuing coverage, for the coverage of flooding in downtown Greensboro in June; general-assignment reporting, for Brent Campbell and Chad Tucker; serious-feature-news report, for a piece on Ronald Cotton, who was wrongly convicted of rape in 1984 and later cleared by DNA evidence; light-feature news, for a series in which Brad Jones traveled for a week exclusively by scooter; sports segment, for a profile of two local ministers who race cars on the weekends; and news photography.
WXII got one nomination, in the light-feature-news-report category, for a segment called "Santa's Surprise" about a 3-year-old girl who asked Santa for a visit from her dad, who was stationed overseas, and got her wish.
WFMY got two nominations, one for the consumer report "Tough Cell Phone" and the other for magazine program for its 2009 Summer Fun Guide. Anchor Sandra Hughes was also announced as an inductee into the "Silver Circle," honoring 25-year contributions to broadcasting.
The award winners will be announced Jan. 30.

About 100 episodes of various shows are currently available; in the coming weeks, the program will expand to include every episode in the Adult Swim original-series library, with more than 30 series and 1000 episodes to choose from.
Each DVD can hold up to 110 minutes of programming and sells for $20.

The golden age of Saturday Night Live came to a close with the show's 1979-80 season, which was the last to feature such stars as Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman and Bill Murray, who particularly got a chance to shine. That season is coming to DVD Tuesday in the Saturday Night Live: The Complete Fifth Season boxed set.
Guest hosts that season included Steve Martin, Eric Idle, Bea Arthur, Bob Newhart and former SNL cast member Chevy Chase; musical guests included Bob Dylan, David Bowie, The B-52s, the Grateful Dead and Blondie.
This week's other new TV-to-DVD releases include the first seasons of Better Off Ted, a quirky ABC series about a man who works for a company that makes bizarre inventions, and Mental, Fox's short-lived drama about a mental hospital; and the third season of The Donna Reed Show.
