Music Brief: Contest and book drive will mark education program's 50th

»  Comments | Post a Comment

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its Mary Starling In-School Education Program, the Winston-Salem Symphony is holding a short-story contest for fifth graders and a book drive to collect 43,000 books for schools in Botswana.

In the short-story competition, fifth- graders will write a story inspired by Mussorgsky's A Night on Bald Mountain; this will be played during "Many People, One World," the Mary Starling concert that all fifth-graders in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools will attend March 3 and 4 in Reynolds Auditorium. There will be prizes for the winners.

The book drive will be held Jan. 4-Feb. 19. Students at 43 elementary schools will try to collect 43,000 books -- 1,000 from each school -- to be sent to sister schools in Botswana.

The symphony needs more than 100 volunteers to help with the book drive. Contact Matthew Troy, at mtroy@wssymphony.org or 725-1035, ext. 209.
