Turmeric

3088 Healy Drive.

Phone: 794-8282. $$. S/NS. ABC.

Lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday

Come here to feast. Dosas and uttapam are regional specialties from India's southern states, thin and thick crepes stuffed with potatoes and spices topped with vegetables, chilies and onions. Scallop biryani, a rice and shellfish dish loaded with cashews, fried onions and raisins. To drink, I love the spicy, milky Indian tea.

Kitchen Roselli

105 E. Main St., East Bend

Phone: 699-4898. $-$$. NS.

Wine only.

Housed in a historic general store in the blink-and-you'll-miss-it town of East Bend, Kitchen Roselli is classic, red-sauce Italian and family friendly. Homemade meatballs and veal parmesan are worth stopping in for if you're in the area. Get here early -- everything seems to sell out!

Mellow Mushroom

314 W. Fourth St.

Phone: 245-2820. $. ABC.

The calzones are so-so, but the parmesan-dusted pies are a treat. Tons of toppings, from tempeh to feta, plus 30-plus beers on tap to wash it down.

Old Salem Tavern

736 S. Main St. (in Old Salem).

Phone: 748-8585. $$$. ABC. S/NS.

3½ bells. Reviewed July 23, 2009.

The Moravians of the early 1800s apparently ate more than sugar cake and the world's thinnest cookies … take pumpkin and sunflower seed crusted salmon, for example, served by wait staff in period costume. Don't miss the homemade lemon ice cream, and a serene dinner on the back porch.

Las Estrellas

845 Silas Creek Parkway.

Phone: 724-1893. $$. ABC. S/NS.

Huge menu, heavy on the seafood (the owners are from Guadalajara) and yes, there are choices beyond refried beans and fajitas. You can't go wrong with the fish tacos.

Sakura Japanese Steak and Seafood

548 S. Stratford Road.

Phone: 777-8744. $$, BW, S/NS.

Home of the volcano roll (a spicy tuna roll flambeed with Everclear) and cheesecake tempura and bento boxes. Among the offerings are udon and soba noodles and a long maki, nigiri and sashimi menu. If you like tuna, try the lightly seared tataki.

Village Tavern

2000 Griffith Road (near Hanes Mall).

Phone: 760-8686. $$. ABC. S/NS.

The comfortable Village Tavern can make a standard grilled-chicken salad taste fresh and new. Wood-oven pizza, steaks, chops, fish, chicken and Sunday brunch.

Natty Greene's Pub and Brewing Company

345 S. Elm St., Greensboro.

Phone: 336-274-1373. $$. ABC. S/NS.

Downtown Greensboro brew pub … the beers are better than the eats, but it's a popular place to grab a cold one.
