MerleFest has announced the 18th annual Chris Austin Songwriting Contest in connection with next year's festival, which will be held April 29 to May 2.

The entry fee is $30. More information, including eligibility requirements and how to submit songs can be found at www.chrisaustinsongwritingcontest.org.

The deadline for submissions is Feb. 18, 2010. The songs will be judged based on originality, lyrics, melody and commercial potential.

There are four categories: country, bluegrass, gospel and general. First-place winners in each category will receive a performance on the Cabin Stage at MerleFest, an acoustic guitar, a check for $300, and more.

The contest is named in honor of Chris Austin, a musician from Boone who died in a private plane crash in 1991.
