2 arts-school grads win dance awards

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Two alumnae of UNC School of the Arts -- Gillian Murphy and Sarah Murphy (no relation) -- have won 2009 Princess Grace Awards.

Gillian Murphy, a principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre, graduated from UNCSA's high school in 1996. She received the Princess Grace Statue Award. This includes a $25,000 unrestricted cash gift and a special Bronze Statue of Princess Grace created by Dutch artist Kees Verkade.

Sarah Murphy, a former contemporary-dance student at UNCSA, graduated from UNCSA's high school in 2006. She received a dance scholarship that will help defray tuition costs at the Juilliard School, where she is scheduled to receive a BFA next year.

The Princess Grace awards, from the Princess Grace Foundation–USA, were presented Oct. 21 in New York City.

The awards continue the legacy of Princess Grace (Kelly) of Monaco, who anonymously helped emerging artists pursue their goals during her lifetime.
