The poet Stanley W. McFarland will read from his works at 2:30 p.m. today at Forsyth County Central Library, 660 W. Fifth St. He is the author of the recently published Confessions of a Protestant, musings in verse on his faith journey.
McFarland lives in Winston-Salem.

Friedman book to be discussed
The Third Wednesday Book Club will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 1925 Hampton Inn Court.
Thomas Friedman's Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution -- and How It Can Renew America will be discussed. The New York Times described it as "common sense about how America and the world are dangerously addicted to cheap fossil fuels while we recklessly use the atmosphere as a dumping ground for carbon dioxide."

Writer to be at WFU, Salem
The poet and novelist Kim Addonizio will give two free presentations this week in Winston-Salem:
□ She will read from her works at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in DeTamble Auditorium of Tribble Hall at Wake Forest University as part of the Dillon Johnston Writers Reading Series. Afterward, there will be a reception and book signing.
□ She will read from her poetry at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Salem Fine Arts Center at Salem College.
Addonizio is the author of four volumes of poetry, including Tell Me, which was a finalist for the 2000 National Book Award. She has also published short fiction, two novels and two instructional books on writing poetry. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the John Ciardi Lifetime Achievement Award.

Novelist to be at WFU, WSSU
The novelist Terry McMillan will be in town on Thursday for events at Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem University.
□ She will give an address at 1 pm. at DeTamble Auditorium of Tribble Hall at WFU as part of the Journeys to Success Speakers Series. The series is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
□ At 7 p.m. at WSSU's Dillard Auditorium, she will give the keynote lecture for the university's commemoration of Women's History Month. She will discuss her work and take audience questions.
McMillan is the author of novels including The Interruption of Everything, Disappearing Acts, How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Waiting to Exhale.
