TV Tidbits: Konnoak Elementary's principal to be on North Carolina Now

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Jay L. Jones, the principal of Konnoak Elementary School, will be featured in a segment airing at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on the UNC-TV series North Carolina Now.

The segment is the first part of a series that looks at the challenges that principals face in raising student achievement. Later segments will look at schools in Goldsboro and Morganton.

"These distinguished school leaders have demonstrated tremendous strengths as the instructional leaders of their schools, and in their execution of seven critical standards for North Carolina principals developed by the Wallace Foundation," according to UNC-TV.

The locally-produced segments are companion pieces to a national documentary on the same subject called The Principal Story. It will air on PBS in September.

Winston-Salem and Greensboro have just been added to the markets where AT&T is offering Mobile TV, a video service for mobile phones that shows Comedy Central, ESPN, Fox News, MSNBC, MTV, Nickelodeon, CNN, NBC, Fox, CBS and more. Some duplicate the networks' schedules, and some have a special schedule for Mobile TV. The service also includes temporary bonus channels for special programming, such as the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship.

It can be used on four handsets: the LG Invision, the LG Vu, Samsung Access and Samsung Eternity. Unlimited access is available for $15 a month.

For more information about the service, go to www.att.com/mobiletv. I will be testing this service in the next few weeks and will write about the results in a later column.

E! has officially become a Speidi-Free Zone.

Last week, the entertainment channel asked viewers to vote on whether or not they should ban any news about Heidi and Spencer Pratt, the stars of The Hills and I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here. The results were announced Monday: 94 percent of voters wanted to hear no more about the couple. The network did not reveal how many people voted.

"Consider them gone from our wheelhouse, voted off the island, fired, out and any other appropriate reality-show catchphrase," said the network's Web site, www.eonline.com.

Ronald D. Moore, the creator of the recent hit remake of Battlestar Galactica, and Michael Taylor, one of that show's writer/producers, take on another spaceship-based story in the new TV movie Virtuality, which will air at 8 p.m. today on Fox.

It follows the crew of the Phaeton, a ship on a 10-year journey through space, who alleviate their boredom with a virtual reality. The movie is as a "backdoor pilot" for a possible weekly series. If it does well in the ratings, we may see more of it.

Sci-fi fans may also want to check out Doctor Who: The Next Doctor, at 9 p.m. today on BBC America. It follows the time-traveling Doctor (David Tennant) to Victorian England, where he encounters steam-powered robots and a man who may be a future incarnation of himself.

Before his career in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1987 to 1995, and before his role as Gopher on The Love Boat from 1977 to 1986, Fred Grandy was part of the Monster Squad.

The campy 1976 Saturday-morning live-action comedy followed the misadventures of three wax-museum monsters -- Dracula, the Frankenstein Monster and the Wolf Man -- who came to life each night to fight crime, hoping to make up for their bad reputations through good deeds. Grandy played their human sidekick, a night watchman. The complete series came to DVD this week in a two-disc, 13-episode boxed set.

Also new on DVD this week are the fifth season of The Girls Next Door, the bubbly reality show set at Hugh Hefner's Playboy Mansion; and the sixth and final season of Reba, Reba McEntire's underappreciated sitcom.
