Saratoga Steakhouse

190 N.C. 801, Advance.

Phone: 998-4400. $$$-$$$$. ABC. S/NS.

Reviewed May 21, 2009.

There's a good reason to stick to steaks here. They're dry-aged -- a pricey but tasty way to age meat -- and delicious with freshly made potato chips or out-of-this-world onion rings. The Kansas City strip is my favorite.

Noma

321 W. Fourth St.

Phone: 703-5112. $$-$$$. ABC. S/NS.

Reviewed Feb. 19, 2009.

Tasty entrees, but the bar food lets me down -- and this is a bar, albeit a sleek, coiffed one. Winners are the flank steak with red wine Vidalia onion jus, chicken with a Dijon and Texas Pete sauce, and pork tenderloin. None is more than $19.

Ombu

615 St. George Square (off of Hanes Mall Boulevard).

Phone: 293-4346. $$$. NS. ABC.

Reviewed Oct. 30, 2008.

"Wood Fired Fusion" is Ombu's tagline, and that seems to invite rambling all over the globe. And indeed, the menu is ambitious, as is everything in this stunning new restaurant.

Aquaria Seafood Grill

3800 Tinsley Drive, High Point.

Phone: 336-844-3474. $$$. ABC. S/NS.

A net full of create-your-own seafood dishes including tuna, scallops, grouper, sea bass, red snapper and more, blackened, grilled or pan-seared as you like it.

Diamondback Grill

751 N. Avalon Road.

Phone: 722-0006. $$$. ABC. S/NS.

A sports bar, a seafood restaurant and a spiffed-up diner all in one. Food to-go and daily drink specials.

El Paisano

2742 Waughtown St.

Phone: 650-0400. $. NS.

Regularly cited as one of the most authentic taco stands in town, at this taqueria, you can see women behind the counter making the corn tortillas that are shortly destined for your mouth.

Foothills Brewing

638 W. Fourth St.

Phone: 777-3348. $$. ABC. S/NS.

Winston-Salem's one and only microbrewery has decent bar food, beer-infused dishes and downtown atmosphere. Go for the she-crab soup, creative salads (just avoid the Caesar) and awesome onion rings.

Camel City Cafe & Wine Bar

401 W. Fourth St.

Phone: 734-1797. $$$. ABC. S/NS.

New Southern doesn't mean green-bean casserole. Shrimp etouffe, lamb and the Whole Kit and Caboodle -- really. It's shrimp, scallops, mussels, clams and snapper braised in broth, served with crusty bread.

Bleu Restaurant & Bar

3425 Frontis St.

Phone: 760-2026. $$$. NS. ABC.

Like a stranger in a strange land, Bleu is a creative restaurant amid the heavy traffic and big-box anonymity of Hanes Mall Boulevard. The menu is big, but there are gems that show the kitchen's not getting lost in it.

Turmeric

3088 Healy Drive.

Phone: 794-8282. $$. S/NS. ABC.

Come here to feast. Dosas and uttapam are regional specialties from India's southern states, thin crepes stuffed with potatoes and spices and their thicker cousin, topped with vegetables, chilies and onions.
