TV Tidbits: Cable networks to mark 40th anniversary of moon landing

»  Comments | Post a Comment

They're On the Moon, Walking Around.

That's how a headline in the Winston-Salem Journal described the historic July 20, 1969, lunar landing. Monday is the 40th anniversary, and several cable networks will have special programming.

National Geographic has a new special Sunday at 8 p.m. called Living on the Moon, which looks at what a human colony on the lunar surface might be like.

TCM will have a marathon of space-themed movies on Monday, co-hosted by Buzz Aldrin, who was the second man to step on the moon. The marathon will start at 6 a.m. with the science-fiction film They Came From Beyond Space.

Other highlights include the comedy The Mouse on the Moon (3 p.m.), the 1902 silent film A Trip to the Moon (8 p.m.), the acclaimed documentary For All Mankind (8:15 p.m.) and the drama The Right Stuff (10 p.m.).

The History Channel will show Moonshot, a new docudrama about the Apollo 11 mission told from the perspective of the astronauts, at 9 p.m. Monday, sandwiched between two lunar-themed episodes of the science program The Universe at 8 and 11 p.m.

Discovery Channel will have a MythBusters episode at 9 p.m. Monday that examines an urban legend that the moon landing was a hoax, followed at 10 p.m. by When We Left Earth, a documentary about the Apollo space program.

Dionn Owen & Renaissance, a gospel group from Winston-Salem, won an award for Community Choir of the Year last weekend at the Rhythm of Gospel Awards in Arkansas.

"We were just overwhelmed," said Sheila Kebe, one of the group's members. "I screamed my head off." The 38-member group, which has members from 13 area churches, was up for four awards.

The ceremony was recorded for broadcast in parts of the Southeast, but a spokesman at the Rhythm of Gospel Awards said that there are no current plans for a broadcast in North Carolina or South Carolina.

NBC is providing new online content for fans of The Office at www.nbc.com/The_Office, including games, blogs, clips and a comical spat on Twitter between two of the show's supporting characters.

"Kelly Vs. Ryan: A Twitter Conversation," in the "Exclusives" section of the site, follows Kelly Kapoor and Ryan Howard, who have hooked up and split up during the course of the series, as they bicker via online messages.

AMC's stylish, smart drama Mad Men tops this week's list of TV-to-DVD releases.

Mad Men -- which is on DVD and Blu-ray -- is set in the world of 1960s Madison Avenue. The focus is on Don Draper (Jon Hamm), a successful ad executive whose entire identity is a carefully fabricated lie -- and one that threatens to fall apart at any minute.

The DVD set is packaged in a limited-edition case designed to look like a shirt box; it's not as eye-catching as season one's cigarette-lighter packaging, but still a nice touch. Extras include commentaries on all 13 episodes, and features about the female characters, styles and historic events of the time.

Another look at 1960s America can be found in Peyton Place, Part 2, also new on DVD. The second volume has 33 more episodes of soap-opera antics, with a cast including Mia Farrow and Ryan O'Neal.

Also new on DVD: the first seasons of Leverage, TNT's clever series with Timothy Hutton as the head of a team of professional thieves who take down corrupt corporations, and American Gladiators, the over-the-top 1980s competition show; the third and fourth seasons of Tracey Ullman's sketch-comedy series Tracey Takes On, together in a four-disc set; the sixth season of the British crime drama Wire in the Blood; and the 11th season of the medical drama ER, which ended its long run on NBC earlier this year.
