Liberty Oak
100-D W. Washington St., Greensboro
Phone: 273-7057. $$-$$$. ABC. S/NS.
A dream of a neighborhood restaurant, with soulful blue-plate specials and creative comfort food. I love the duck-liver pate with apricot chutney, the salad Nicoise and scallops seared in curry oil. The soups are usually good.
Mary's Of Course
301 Brookstown Ave.
Phone: 725-5764. $. S/NS.
It's a joy to taste what's on chef and owner Mary Haglund's mind and her specials board: chilled fruit soup, crab-cake eggs Benedict, vegetarian this and that. Sunday brunch is legendary, but come with the newspaper and be prepared to get in line.
Miss Annie's
3064 Healy Drive.
Phone: 774-0922. $$$. BW. NS.
Small and romantic, this unlikely strip- mall restaurant serves up French and Caribbean fare without the schmaltz. Jerked chicken, cod fritters, rice and beans, creme brulee.
Camel City Cafe & Wine Bar
401 W. Fourth St.
Phone: 734-1797. $$$. ABC. S/NS.
New Southern doesn't mean green-bean casserole. It's shrimp, scallops, mussels, clams and snapper braised in broth, served with crusty bread.
Milner's American Southern
630 S. Stratford Road.
Phone: 768-2221. $$$. ABC. S/NS.
Charleston-inspired upscale Southern -- crab cakes, baked pimento cheese, frogmore stew, pork tenderloin crusted with Moravian spice cookies, sweet-potato bread pudding, and on and on.
Bonefish Grill
300 S. Stratford Road.
Phone: 724-4518. $$-$$$. ABC. S/NS.
Corporate but cozy, this chain is all about seafood, flown in fresh daily and much of it grilled over an oak fire.
Mooney's Mediterranean Cafe

Finger-licking Lebanese-centric sandwiches, salads and sides. Stick to the menu's "Old Country" choices, such as fried cauliflower, tawook, shawarma and moujudara (savory lentils laced with a touch of sweet cinnamon and caramelized onions).
Kernel Kustard
1630 Fox Trot Court.
Phone: 768-1085. $.
Kernel Kustard's frozen-custard flavor of the day includes a rotating menu of seasonal flavors. See if you can turn down the addictive caramel corn.
Ombu
615 St. George Square (off of Hanes Mall Boulevard).
Phone: 293-4346. $$$. NS. ABC.
Reviewed Oct. 30, 2008.
"Wood Fired Fusion" is Ombu's tagline, but that seems to invite rambling all over the globe. The list ranges from saffron lobster bisque to pizzas dressed with garlic cream and thai peanut chicken. Or you can get a hamburger.
Chang Thai
4146 Clemmons Road, Clemmons.
Phone: 778-0388. $$. NS. BW.
It's worth driving to Clemmons for good renditions of Thai standards -- I love the curries, masaman in particular -- mixed with a strange dash of Japanese hibachi and teriyaki.
