The Western Film Fair will return to Winston-Salem next week, with guests who have appeared in various films and TV shows over the years -- and not just Westerns.
This year's scheduled guests, for instance, include Kathy Garver (Cissy from Family Affair), Lynda Day George (Mission: Impossible) and four actors who -- among many other roles -- had memorable guest appearances on the classic Star Trek TV series: Gary Lockwood, Michael Forest, Beverly Washburn and BarBara Luna. Other performers who will appear include musicians Donna Fargo and George Hamilton IV, and various actors and actresses. A complete guest list can be found at www.westernfilmfair.com.
More than 80 films and TV shows, most of them Westerns from the 1940s to 1960s, will be screened, and guests will take part in panel interviews. There will also be a dealer's room with movie and TV memorabilia including DVDs, videotapes, lobby cards, posters, magazines and toys. There will also be autograph tables. The fair will culminate next Saturday night with a banquet and an award ceremony, at which singer Donna Fargo will receive the Ernest Tubb Memorial Award for career achievement.
This is the fair's 32nd year and its second in Winston-Salem after moving from Charlotte.
The fair will start at 1 p.m. Wednesday, and most of the celebrities will be on hand Thursday through next Saturday, though schedules vary. The fair is being held at the Clarion Sundance Plaza Hotel, 3050 University Parkway.
A daily pass is $20 a person, or $5 after 5 p.m. Three-day passes are $60, or $75 for married couples. For more information, go to westernfilmfair.com or call 704-851-3113.
Dionn Owen & Renaissance, a gospel group from Winston-Salem, is up for four awards at the Rhythm of Gospel Awards, which will be given out Saturday in Arkansas. They have been nominated for Traditional Album of the Year, Community Choir of the Year, Artist of the Year and Traditional Song of the Year. The awards honor independent gospel artists.
"It's slightly overwhelming," said Dionn Owen, the choir's director of music. "It's really a true blessing."
The 38-member group has singers from 13 different churches, most in Winston-Salem, Owen said. The first members got together in 2001 when Owen's church, Macedonia Worship Center, was having an annual music day. "From there, it was just an explosion," Owen said. They have recorded two CDs and one DVD.
The awards ceremony is being recorded, and highlights will be broadcast at a later date. Details of the broadcasts will be announced online at rhythmofgospel.com.
Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the gang are featured in Peanuts: 1960s Collection, a two-disc set with all six Peanuts cartoon specials that aired in the 1960s. The most popular are A Charlie Brown Christmas and It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. The set also includes the lesser-known Charlie Brown's All-Stars; You're in Love, Charlie Brown; He's Your Dog, Charlie Brown; and It Was a Short Summer, Charlie Brown, plus a documentary about composer Vince Guaraldi.
There are also two new volumes of the long-running British science-fiction series Doctor Who: The Rescue/The Romans, a two-disc set with the first actor to play The Doctor, William Hartnell, and Attack of the Cybermen, with the sixth Doctor, Colin Baker. Each volume has extensive extras including commentaries and behind-the-scenes features.
Other shows new to DVD this week include the first (and only) season of NBC's Kath and Kim, about a brash, loudmouthed mother and daughter; the second season of Petticoat Junction, the low-key rural sitcom from the creators of Green Acres and The Beverly Hillbillies; the third season of Matlock, Andy Griffith's show about a crafty Southern lawyer; and Murder, She Wrote: The Complete 10th Season.
