Bleu Restaurant & Bar
3425 Frontis St.
Phone: 760-2026. $$$. NS. ABC.
Like a stranger in a strange land, Bleu is a creative restaurant amid the heavy traffic and big-box anonymity of Hanes Mall Boulevard. The menu is big, but there are gems that show that the kitchen is not getting lost in it.
Kitchen Roselli
105 E. Main St., East Bend
Phone: 699-4898. $-$$. NS. Wine only.
Housed in a historic general store in East Bend, Kitchen Roselli is classic, red-sauce Italian and family-friendly. Homemade meatballs and veal parmesan are worth stopping in for if you're in the area. Get here early -- everything seems to sell out!
Taco Alverado

A tiny tacqueria on the Southside. Feast on tacos, tortas, chiles rellenos and syrupy Mexican soda in cold glass bottles while watching soccer on the restaurant television.

Tasty entrees, but the bar food lets me down -- and this is a bar, albeit a sleek, coiffed one. Winners are the flank steak with red wine Vidalia onion jus, chicken with a Dijon and Texas Pete sauce, and pork tenderloin. None is more than $19.

Finger-licking Lebanese-centric sandwiches, salads and sides. Stick to the menu's "Old Country" choices, like fried cauliflower, tawook, shawarma and moujudara (savory lentils laced with a touch of sweet cinnamon and caramelized onions).

Charleston comes to the Yadkin Valley. Beginnings and endings are highlights here -- lamb carpaccio and celestial pimento cheese to start, and to end, ginger-molasses ice cream, star anise creme brulee and marshmallows that taste like root beer.
Blue Ridge Ice Creams
135 S. Stratford Road.
Phone: 724-5454. $. NS.
It's hard to resist the bevy of fun flavors, which extend to the gelato case, too (honey-lavender and strawberry balsamic among them). My favorites? The chocolate truffle is deep, dark and not too sweet, and lemon yogurt-flavored gelato is zippy.
Finnigan's Wake
620 N. Trade St.
Phone: 723-0322. $$-$$$. S/NS.
Though the service is chronically lackadasicial, the traditional Irish selections here make this a menu to seek out if you're in the mood for unusual rib-sticking pub food. Brunch is especially good and the best deal on the menu.

Tapped by foodie magazine Saveur in 2000 as one of the top 100 restaurants in the United States. How can the Dinner Belle entice these restaurateurs to move just a tad west?
